American History August 2010 Cover
This image of JP Morgan needed to be colorized for use on the cover of the magazine. I was given reference colors to use for coloring the clothes and flesh tones. Morgan had a severe case of rosacea and the art director wanted that conveyed in the colorization to help bring out the detail of the affected skin areas. I built in lots of extra red to some of the areas to help convey the affliction.
MHQ Winter 2013 Cover
The art director wanted a colorized version of General Custer for use on the cover with a very strong red color over the background texture. I was given accurate color swatches of the uniform and paintings of him to use as reference for flesh tones and hair. This issue of the magazine was nominated for an ASME National Magazine Award
American History Feature June 2010
The opening spread image for this feature showcased a classic photo of the 2 pioneering ballplayers. The art director felt a vintage colorization to the black and white photo would add great interest to the image. I was supplied with color reference to the uniforms of the time. Most of the field and background was not colored because the final layout had a color gradient used to block out the copy for the story as shown in a later image. I ended up silhouetting most of the background out to make way for the blue gradient.
Vietnam Magazine December 2012 Cover
This scene was chosen for the cover. The art director wished to color the image to add some impact. Multiple color references were supplied for uniforms and the helicopters. This was a very intense image to color as it had lots of components. It required many masking and coloring techniques to help keep the depth of field with the copters in the sky along with all the gear stacked upon the soldiers.
Images Used in Designs
Shown here are all the images used in their final layouts. The designs were done by the respective magazine's art directors. I only supplied the colorized images. All magazines were published by the Weider History Group.
